Before you go on a vacation with your dog, be sure you follow all the safety precautions when on board with the pets. Since accidents do happen in the road, you have to make sure your pet is safe all throughout the long drive. Unlike humans, they cannot stabilize their position well and even a mild collision can throw them in the dashboard and hit the hard surface of the car. If you want to secure the safety of your pet, dog seat belts are excellent partners. Here are the safety travel tips you must follow.

Keep the Fit Snug

Dog seat belts come in varying sizes depending on the size of your pet. Before buying your item, make sure you get the one most fitting for them. When you put the protection around their chest, ensure that the fit is snug. Do not tighten it too much as it can cause strangulation and agitation for the pet. Remember, an irritated dog can cause disturbance to the driver. On the other hand, a too-loose fit does not provide enough security to the animal. Keep the straps secure yet comfortable enough for the dog to move in its place.

Do not allow the Head to be out

Although dogs like to watch the scenery outside, the practice of letting their head out in the window is never safe. If you are driving fast, the dust and pollution can cause irritation in their eyes. Much as you want them to enjoy the trip as you do, safety should always come first. Partially close the windows and secure the dog. Use a dog safety harness to avoid the temptation of roaming around.

Place them at the Back seat

The safest place for your dogs during the long drive is the back seat. Place your pet in the middlemost area and secure them with their dog seat belt. Research has found that the place provides maximum security for your animal. Keep them comfortable by adjusting the strap just enough to allow them to move their bodies in their seat during the trip.

Avoid Distractions

Another safety tip that you must observe when traveling with dogs is to avoid distractions as much as possible. Because your dogs’ behavior can affect your driving, provide them with a comfortable environment. If possible, do not bring more than two pets with you. The two may irritate one another and later on, cause them to fight. Do not place anything with the dog, like a toy or your groceries. The animal may get interested with it and insist on being freed to play with your things.

Be Prepared

For a longer car trip, take along a plastic water jug, a few plastic bowls and a container of dog food (preferably kibble so it won’t spoil) with a tight fitting top to avoid spillage. Also bring along a few old towels to clean up accidents, spills or even dog drool. Also bring a first aid kit for both you and your dog and bring an extra leash.

Just in Case…

Get the name, address and phone number of an animal hospital at your destination area ahead of time just in case you might need it. Take a picture of you and your dog in case he gets away from you and you need to prove it is your dog. It’s a great idea to get your dog micro-chipped too. Another thing that might help you reunite you and your dog: get personalized dog tags with your cell phone number AND the name and phone number of a friend or relative that will not be with you on the trip.

Just a few things to help you and your pet have a great trip!

Whether it is for lodging, food, or attractions – coupons SAVE money! Find them everywhere… online, in local newspapers, at convenience stores, motels, etc. Always read the fine print carefully for terms of the coupon.

September 6th, 2010 at 12:55 pm Most parents take the extra time to buckle up their children for safety however; many people often forget that their pets are also at risk of serious injury or death should they be involved in a vehicle accident. According to Bark Buckle Up, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reported that over half a million people were injured in vehicle accidents in 2008 and over 775,000 of those injured were traveling with their pets. It may seem like common sense, but some drivers still do not understand why a dog should wear a seat belt when traveling in a vehicle.

Thanks for the share of wonderful information here . Very helpful, Thanks ! ö
February 25th, 2011 at 9:56 pm I have to agree that dog seat belts are a great idea. Many times we have taken our pups on trips and never even consider that they are loose in the vehicle. A sudden stop and an eighty pound dog are not a good mix.
